Clear Navigational Aids

Figure 8: This screenshot distinguishes clear navigation by using a green color for the heading and gray for the body text.

The San Antonio Food Bank webpage uses clear navigational aids to assist its users.  The site creates a sense of location by using page titles, headings, icons, and graphic schemes (Horton and Lynch 104).  As shown in figure 8, every pages’ title is bold and consists of a larger text than those in the body.  Also, each title and heading are green, opposed to the grey body text.  There is a consistency in the site’s logo in the top left corner.  According to Horton and Lynch, “users should always be able to return easily to your home page” (104).  Clicking the site’s logo navigates users to the homepage.

 Browse Versus Search

The San Antonio Food Bank’s webpage does not use a search feature.  According to interface research, there is a 50/50 chance that web users will prefer to search over browse (WSG 100). Horton and Lynch believe that being able to search and browse, are great features for interface design (100).  Although there is no search feature, it is very easy to find information through the menu on the left.  Also, the site implements the four W’s, which answers who, what, when and where (WSG 114).  Being able to answer these questions creates less need for a search feature.
